3-D Cart

Computer Aided Radar Tomography (CART)  an innovative technology providing excavation projects with underground video to make assets ‘visible’.

We endeavour to provide clients with solutions that lower their project risks and costs as well as, enhance their confidence, accuracy and protection of underground assets. Give one of our professional team members a call today on 0508 822834 to find out more about our 3D CART solutions and how we can help you.

Get in Touch

Armed with the confidence of correct utility information, our clients are able to produce better designs, and make more accurate cost and risk assessment decisions. Be able to access accurate information for your project designs gives you the ability to submit better tenders and drive project schedules.

Vac-U-Digga NZ's original and innovative, all-encompassing technology turns the “invisible into the visible” and our clients can visualise the unknown anomalies that require more investigation. The ability to identify these conflict areas at design stages effectively minimises the need and costs associated with redesign.

The Outcome

Major projects and works being carried out in areas with high utility conflicts will benefit from our CART systems in a number of ways including (but are not limited to):

  • “Top down movies” at 1.0 cm depth slices are created from the surface to easily view the 3D GPR data.

  • Site survey coordinates are merged with CART results then displayed in CAD drawing at their real world positions – an unbelievable technical advantage for you.

  • Continuous coverage of underground utilities eliminates ‘guess’ work through interpolation.

  • 3D CART is crucial information in detecting pipe installations by ‘trenching’ from the surface.

  • All interpreted CART data is exported into CAD drawings with site survey control.

  • The ability to overlay CART data information into existing plans effectively and provide updated utility records.

  • The need for ‘blind’ digging and trenching is reduced by pinpointing the vicinity of utilities that can then be exposed by non-destructive hydro excavation.

  • At any stage of the project access to information supplied through GPS coordinates and Total Robotic Survey station which enables the identification and pinpoint utility data at any stage in the project.

  • Ability to identify utility conflict areas during design stage, effectively eradicating the need and costs associated with redesign.

  • Confidence in developing fixed cost quotation of works and elimination of budget blow outs.

CART Advantages

CART deliverables are in the form of movie slices at 25 mm depth layers over the complete area along with Plan and sectional CAD drawings of buried infrastructure. This facilitates more accurate designs, which offers the ability to make better cost and risk assessment decisions.

Key Deliverables:

  • Computer Assisted Drawing (CAD) file

  • Dated PDF drawings

  • Movie file of 3D Radar data

CART Deliverables

Generally, the Vac-U-Digga NZ team will arrive on site, scan and collate extensive data from the designated project area. This is carried out by using 3D Computer Assisted Radar Tomography; aided as necessary by 2D GPR and EMI technologies. The gathered data is then interpreted by our qualified operators and converted into 3D imagery. The deliverables are then converted into multi-layer survey quality CAD format drawings that can be overlaid on current plans with satellite imagery to assist in the orientation and interpretation.

3 - 5 days after the scanning process is complete, preliminary deliverables will be available for clients to view. Ground proving and calibration work can then be commenced on mutual beneficial potholing locations by our specialised non-destructive digging equipment.

Our Methodology

Part of our ‘one stop shop’ solution exclusive to Vac-U-Digga NZ is our 3-D technology Computer Assisted Radar Tomography – ‘CART’. CART technology provides high resolution, fully navigable 3D imagery of the subsurface depicting in high detail underground assets and infrastructure with amazing clarity and accuracy. Thanks to our new CART system, we offer our clients highly accurate and highly detailed reports that can be delivered in a range of formats including AutoCAD or Bentley MX drawing format with associated images.

CART can be integrated seamlessly with Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) hardware, Geophysical Diffraction Tomography (GDT) software, surveying, and Subsurface Utility Information (SUI) classifications. These processes are collected, analysed and integrated into a deliverable format which gives our clients a total picture of the subsurface infrastructure and accurate locations of underground assets.

Infrastructure Obstacles – Making the Invisible, Visible

Excavation works can often be a case of trying to pick your way through an unseen network of underground assets. Identifying and excavating around underground infrastructure and utilities has always been a major challenge facing contractors, construction teams, councils and authorities alike. One of the key reasons for this problem is a lack of accurate utility mapping data pinpointing the precise location of underground assets. Until now, having visibility on the underground network of services to shape project designs around utility conflicts and lowering the risk of damaging underground assets has been impossible.

Vac-U-Digga NZ is proud to be part of the Christchurch Rebuild Program and to be engaged on the delivery of the high-speed Ultra Fast Broadband and other major projects across New Zealand.
